How To Clean Green Algae From Keurig
Post by seasidemermaid on Jun 29, 2017 2:26:52 GMTMy Keurig and Brita pitcher sit on my counter and I have to wash them out at least once a week, if not more often, or algae starts to grow. I'm tempted to buy some contact paper to cover the Keurig reservoir and see if that helps, but the Brita's shape will make it harder to do. Anyone else have problems with algae growth and found a solution? | |

If sun regularly hits your water, and you aren't using distilled water, you'll get algae. When you wash out the reservoirs, add either 1/4 bleach or 1/4 cup of white vinegar to a full tank of water and let it sit for 10 minutes. Then wash as usual. That will help kill anything hanging onto the surface. |

I live in Detroit area and we've always been known for good drinking water. Especially compared to Phoenix where my son lives. However, I have a white shih tzu who, bless her heart, has horrible tear stains. I read where unfiltered water could be a cause. So ok, I can drink Detroit's water but if it causes my baby to have yucky eyes, well that can't happen. So I got a Brita. Just for my dog. 😮 I keep it on my counter, only have had it a few days. Don't know if it will clear up Macie's eyes but now I know what to do if I get algae! elaine you're the best. |

Unfortunately, I have no place to put it out of the sun so the algae will always grow. I will try the vinegar soak because I can't always get in the nooks and crannies to scrub. |
Post by seasidemermaid on Jun 29, 2017 14:21:09 GMTThanks elaine . I do scrub it and do the vinegar wash, but worried that bleach might ruin the rubber/metal parts on the reservoir. Unfortunately, our entire kitchen is bright so there's no other place to move the Keurig. I think I might try wrapping the reservoir in contact paper and see if that helps. I think we'll also look into an inline water filter for the sink. I only use the Brita for the Keurig as the fridge has it's own water filter and may just get rid of the thing all together. Of course now I wonder how clean other people's Keurig and Britas are. We have a Brita at work that is just nasty and I would never drink from that. | |

I ditched my Keurig and for a single cup K cup brewer because I was grossed out by the whole water in the reservoir thing. Now I pour in fresh water and hit a button. Not to fill my Keurig and I already have cold filtered drinking water through my refrigerator, but yeah the reservoir thing is gross. I might have to look into one of those single serve units, but does water still linger in the hoses? Even with my Keurig, there's water in the hose at all times. Ugh, I think I'll start doing the vinegar washes more frequently. | |

This would eliminate the Brita and a place to store it and it might help with the algae growth. I would probably clean ever thing and run a few cycles of diluted bleach or a stronger cycle of white vinegar and then start fresh with the filtered fridge water. if you are still having the issue, then I would think some contact paper might work because it would keep it dark. |

Our water dispenser is located inside the fridge so the door would have to stay open for a quite bit in order to fill the reservoir. I think I will try the contact paper and see how that works. | |

I don't recall reading that, but they make countertop units so I'm pretty sure that they don't have to be stored in the fridge. Fascinating. I use a Brita and a Keurig and have never had this issue. I guess it depends on where the water originates? I keep the Brita in the refrigerator, and the Keurig is on the kitchen counter. We make around 3-5 cups of coffee/day, so the water doesn't sit very long. I use ours about as frequently as you do. The algae can be hard to see because of the smoked finish. Try holding yours in front of a bright window and see if you see anything in the corners. | |

I like cold water, so I assume they should too. It doesn't stay cold for very long once it is transferred to their fountain. I do use vinegar when I wash it, every single time, and I use vinegar in my Keurig frequently too. In fact, I keep a decorative pump on my countertop that is filled with white vinegar. When I wash the pet dishes, I get a pump of soap and a couple pumps of vinegar and wash them up. This is in my master bathroom because I am feeding them upstairs and I moved my Keurig upstairs too. I typically only have a cup of coffee first thing in the morning, and having it in my room is so convenient. I have found that my sponge is never stinky when I add vinegar to it so often. In fact, I was just thinking that I need to get another cute dispenser and put it by my kitchen sink for vinegar use down there too. I buy it by the giant bottle at Costco every time I go there. It disinfects without ruining things like bleach would do. |

It was ugly though so I ended up ordering some black matte vinyl from Amazon and it matches perfectly! You can't even tell that it isn't original to the unit. If anyone else has the algae problem, you might want to give this a try. | |

I solved it by getting rid of the Brita. For my (former) Keurig, I discovered I had to use Crystal Geyser spring water in it ... anything else grew algae, including Alhambra which is the other big-name spring water around these parts, and I think they're even the same company as Crystal Geyser. Go figure. Anyway, when the Keurig died, I replaced it with a Bunn MyCafe (also takes k-cups, but no reservoir, you pour in the water for each cup you make) and continue to use only CG water in it. No problems after several years of use. |

We just upgraded to a Keurig with an 80 oz tank, but we make a lot of tea or coffee, so it will cycle through quickly. It's also a dark gray plastic so maybe that will help with sunlight (it's actually not going to get any direct light where it sits). Thanks for the thread though - I regularly run cleaner through my dishwasher, washer, disposal, and coffee maker, but I probably wouldn't have thought to soak the tank weekly with bleach or vinegar. | |
